1.2 VOLVO Service Manuals - Repair and Maintenance Manuals
The on line repair manual you are reading now doesn't pretend to be as complete as other manuals available in printed format. With time we hope to eventually publish a printed version of this manual but we admit, for now, that other manuals are more detailed and practical! We also must admit that having a computer hooked in the garage is not very practical for everyone, and a printed book can be carried everywhere in the car in case of emergency. Fell free to print as much pages from this web site as you want, but we also strongly recommend you purchase at least one printed service manual described in the section if you intend to work on your car by yourself.
Service manuals contain detailed information for tune-up, maintenance, repair, debug/troubleshoot and restoration of your VOLVO. Service manuals also include specifications, step by step repair procedures, tools, many illustrations, pictures, wiring diagram. Imagine the money you can save by doing it yourself.. The small investment in a repair manual can payback many times in the future.
Genuine VOLVO Service Manuals
VOLVO publishes many service manuals available to the car owners. They are the most complete and trustable source of information and this is what VOLVO dealers must use as a reference for approved repair procedures. However they do have major drawbacks described below.
The first problem with genuine VOLVO service manuals is their price; it can cost thousands of dollars to built a complete library of manuals for just one model/year. The manuals are published in sections, for example one manual for the body, another one for the engine, another one just for the injection system, another one for the exhaust system and the list goes on forever. Each section can cost around $50 and the way it is broken down you may need 50 sections to get a complete set, so the total could be around $2500 for your car. In these conditions most manuals are purchased by VOLVO dealers and indepedant repair shops whoservice enough VOLVOs to justify the expense. Note that what is written above applies to the 240/260 and later VOLVO models. For ealier models like the 544, 120, 140, 1800 and 164 Series VOLVO published a single book containing all the sections and those can be purchased at a decent price, around $75.
The second problem with VOLVO genuine service manuals is the fact they take for granted that you are working at a VOLVO dealer and have access to special tools and equipment like a car lift and fancy diagnosis computers. Books published by independant publishers (see below for more on those) will explain the same repair procedure using common tools available to the home mechanic and small repair shops. For example instead of using a fancy VOLVO diagnosis computer they will explain how to find the problem using a voltmeter.
We still recommend you keep your eyes open for genuine VOLVO manuals if you can get them at a decent price. Sometimes they come up for sale on auction web sites or at car show swap meets. During the summer 2003 a guy was selling a complete set of used VOLVO 240 manuals for $600 at the Canadian VOLVO Club meet. At that price I passed my turn and dont regret, all the information I really need can be found in independently published manuals for much much cheaper (see below). For ealier models like the 544, 120, 140, 1800 and 164 Series VOLVO published as a single book, you can rather easily find used copies from VLVworld.com and other web sites. The 140 and 164 Series books go for really cheap at swap meets given the low demand for those. Expect to pay more for 544, 120 and certainly 1800 Series Service Manuals in good condition.

Service Manuals from Independent Publishers
The most affordable service manuals are those published by independant publishers like Haynes, Chilton or Autobooks. Those books are much cheaper than VOLVO genuine documents, wich can cost over a thousand dollars for a complete set for your specific car model ! Even if they are not as detailed as the original VOLVO books, the aftermarket books will be sufficient for most VOLVO owners and are often more practical because they don't assume you are in a VOLVO dealership environment. For example the original VOLVO manual may describe a procedure using a special VOLVO tool available only to VOLVO dealers, the aftermarket book will describe the same procedure using an ordinary tool everyone has in its tool box.
Genuine VOLVO Parts Manuals and Microfiches
If you plan on restoring an older VOLVO model you may be interested in the purchase of a VOLVO Parts Manual. Those show exploded views of each components of the car and list the part number of each part. It is easier when dealing with VOLVO parts supplier if you already know the part number of what you are looking for. It also makes it easy to find parts on the Internet. You must understand that a lot of VOLVO dealers dont even have the parts manuals for older VOLVO models (pre 240) and those are not computerized. All dealers can order any VOLVO part if they have a part number, but can't do anything without.
